Te Awamutu Community Health Transport Trust (Te Awamutu Health Shuttle) was set up to meet an ever increasing demand in the community for transport to attend medical appointments at Waikato Hospital. A public meeting was held in July 2009. Several groups responded and subsequently a working group of interested representatives began the job of setting up a charitable trust and establishing the shuttle service as we know it today. To get to this point a lot of effort was put into for the Board of Trustees, finding volunteers and fundraising locally and from successful grant applications.
Each year the numbers of clients increase from small beginnings in April 2011 to 1700 people between 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.
The service started with a Ford Transit van with wheelchair hoist in 2011, a Mazda people mover was added two years later and that was replaced in 2015 by a Toyota Hiace van.
Te Awamutu Citizens Advice Bureau were engaged to be the booking office during the day Monday to Friday, a relationship which still exists.
